It is hard to choose the right variable frequency inverter based only on power. There are also other factors to ensure the correct AC inverter for your application.

Application Type

Variable torque (VT) and constant torque (CT) with separate ratings for each are two different application types. It is important that you know the application type because the inverter specifications are organized accordingly. In the case you dont know which one to choose it is recommendable to go with constant torque (CT).

Full Load Amperage

Be sure that your AC inverter can hangle the motor current demands. Please check the nameplate on the motor for full load current. If you are feeding the drive with single-phase power, be sure to use the drive ratings for single-phase. Please note that even when if the drive is powered with single-phase power they always create three-phase output for the motor.


AC Inverters produce a high amount of heat and can also exceed the temparature ratings of the inverter. Extern or enclosure cooling/ventilation may be required.

Carrier Frequency

It is important to go for the lowest frequency your motor can handle.


Please note that the altutide has the impact on cooling. Mostly all the AC inverters are made to work fine up to 1000m altitude. If you are using AC inverters in altutudes higher than 1000m that will have the negative impact on cooling.


Most AC drives are designed to operate at 150% overload for 60 seconds. Be sure the drive can handle any overload conditions you may expect during startup or intermittent extra loading.


Mostly AC Inverters are made with IP20 protection which means: protection against contact and against the penetration of solid foreign objects larger than ø 12 mm. No special protection against water. If your surrounding environment is harsher or there is also water included you should choose higher protection level.
